The purpose of this website originally was to provide a space for members of community surrounding Claremont Playlot Park to share ideas about revitalizing and redeveloping the park to suit the needs of the neighborhood and our families. This site serves as a repository for ideas generated by the community as well as documentation/forms regarding Park Advisory Council formation from the Chicago Park District. As of November 2010, the group is now formally recognized as a Park Advisory Council by the Chicago Park District.
After receiving a Kohl's/Children's Memorial grant, funding from Aldermen Fioretti and Solis as well as TIF funding, Phase II of the park redesign--the new playlot--will be built Summer 2012. See the 'News' tab for more details.
The idea behind the website was initiated during an informal
meeting held at Claremont Park on September 30, 2010. Approximately 35
community members--most of whom are from the surrounding community
and were contacted by word of mouth--decided to begin the mindwork of
taking action in the hopes of realizing the potential of this area. During
this initial/informal gathering, there was a clear interest from
neighborhood residents as well as 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti (who
made an appearance) to take the next steps in seeking improvements to
the park. Since the initial meeting there has been a tremendous
about of energy and momentum. Fundraising efforts are well underway and a
planner has been assigned by the Chicago Park District to address
concerns and begin designing a new playground at Claremont Playlot Park. We have secured 200k in contributions from Aldermen Fioretti and Solis, and have several promising grants pending. In addition, the PAC has grown in size with over 100 community members and their families. Because of the money in hand, Phase 1 of the efforts will begin during the Summer 2011 with Phase 2 to follow next year. Come join in our efforts to make the park a safer space for all to enjoy.
